If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, you’ll already know that sex isn’t all about penetration. And in the kind of summer heatwave the UK is experiencing at the moment, the best kind of sex can be the sex you have where you barely touch at all – mutual masturbation, solo sex, and other things which don’t involve snuggling up too close to another sweaty human being. But there are a few extra things you can add that’ll help you stay cool, so if you’re simultaneously horny while also hot and bothered, check out our summer heatwave sex tips.

Sensation play – ice

The ‘put an ice cube in your mouth’ sex tip sounds like a massive cliché, but some clichés are there for a reason. Sensation play with ice cubes is one of the best ways to beat the summer heat. Try running ice cubes over your partner’s body, or placing one in your mouth to give them cold kisses and licks, as demonstrated perfectly in this blog post by our friends over at Jo Divine. Jo gives a detailed (and NSFW) account of icy sensation play which also works as a handy guide on how best to make use of temperature in the bedroom…

“Chills ran through me, my skin tightening, and I realised he had taken an ice cube and put it in his mouth! The cool kiss began to melt against my heated skin as his mouth travelled lower and lower until his icy lips were on my breast. I was tingling with pleasure, a warmth growing between my legs despite his cold kisses.”

If you are planning on using ice during sensation play, remember that you need to prepare it before you place it directly on someone’s skin, especially if the skin is around the lips or genitals, where ice can potentially stick if it’s too frosty. Take your ice cubes out of the freezer, and either run them under a tap to partially melt the outside layer or – better still – pop them in a glass with some cold water.

Sensation play – sex toys

Some sex toys – like glass and ceramic dildos – can be warmed up or cooled down for added sensation. For these, use similar techniques to the ice above: don’t ever put your sex toys directly into the freezer, and then use them straight from the freezer on your genitals. That way lies pain and a possible trip to A+E.

Instead, get a glass of iced water and submerge your sex toy in it to cool it down before use. Voilà! Instant shivery tingles, for solo or partnered sex during the summer heatwave.

Cooling lube

There are plenty of fantastic cooling lubes on the market – they offer tingling, chilly sensations. Sliquid’s Sizzle sounds hot but in fact the addition of food grade menthol to the lube means it cools you down when you apply it, and only warms up with friction. It’s water-based so totally safe to use with PULSE (SOLO or DUO).

Or if you’re more of a nipple-play person, this cooling nipple balm from Lovehoney will tingle and stimulate you even as it cools you down. It’s flavoured and edible too, so if you’ve always wanted to turn your partner into the human version of a mint-choc-chip ice cream, now’s your chance.

Shower sex

We know that cold showers are usually a way to turn off, but in this heat they can have the opposite effect – cooling you down just enough that you’re able to get aroused despite the heatwave.

PULSE SOLO ESSENTIAL is 100% waterproof, so you can use it in a shower, cool bath, or even the paddling pool if your garden is private! And it’ll do all of the hard work for you – just put it on your penis, press a button, and enjoy the deep, rumbling vibrations without the need to work up a sweat!

Sex without touching

Recently the Mirror ran a feature on an unusual new way to get close to someone: having an out-of-body experience with them. ‘Astral projection’ enthusiast Steve G Jones believes that it’s possible to ‘project’ your mind outside your body, and have sex with your partner that way.

“You both get into your astral bodies and move together … You find that you can become much more intertwined in the astral body than you can in the physical body.”

We don’t blame you if you’re sceptical, but the idea of sex without touching is worth exploring, even if ‘astral projection’ isn’t your thing. How about some ‘aural’ sex, where you and your partner swap dirty stories? Or some mindful masturbation, where instead of touching each other you simply enjoy touching yourselves, describing the sensations and being present in the moment?

Whatever your technique, one thing’s for certain: you don’t have to be pressed together sweatily in order to get it on. The summer heatwave could be an excellent excuse to explore more cerebral sexual connections.

Heatwave sex tips – safety first

It might be tempting to dive head-first into our sex tips, but whatever you’re doing in the heatwave, make sure you stay safe. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, grab yourself a decent protective suncream (it doesn’t have to break the bank – you can even pick up good suncream from your nearest pound shop!) and be on the lookout for heat exhaustion.

If you start to feel dizzy, tired, headachey or nauseous, get out of the sun immediately and lie down in a cool place. The NHS website has more information to help you keep cool even in the heatwave.
