Top Anal Masturbation Tips

Welcome to May! The greatest month of the year, and not just because the sun has arrived: May is Masturbation Month! Which, for wankers like us, means we have an excuse to share with you some top anal masturbation tips. If you want to spend time exploring your body and experimenting with new ways to wank, this blog post is for you!

What is anal masturbation?

Anal masturbation is any and all masturbation that involves your butt in some way. You may be using a finger to penetrate yourself while you wank, or using a butt plug, dildo or other anal sex toy to stimulate your prostate while you masturbate. In this guide to anal masturbation, we’ll run through a few possible options, but let’s start with the health and safety briefing…

Anal play safety tips

There are two golden rules when you’re engaging in any form of anal play – whether solo anal masturbation or anal stimulation with a partner.

Rule 1: what goes up must come down. You’ve probably heard stories about people being admitted to hospital with various household objects stuck in their bums, and we’re sorry to say that not all of these are urban legends. In fact, there’s a website – Radiopaedia – where radiologists collect X-rays of some of the unusual items people have got stuck inside themselves. So before you embark on your anal masturbation orgy, make sure that if you are inserting anything into you it’s safe to go inside your body.

Any anal sex toy must have a flared base (like a butt plug) or other mechanism you can use to easily remove it (like the large, round hoop often found at the end of anal beads). The aim of the base is to prevent the toy from being pulled up into your anus and getting lodged there.

Rule 2: lube is your new best friend. Lubricant makes anal masturbation far safer and more enjoyable. Choose your favourite lube according to your play: if you’re playing with silicone toys, you’ll want a water-based lube, whereas if you’re using your fingers you can go for any kind of lubricant that you like. This isn’t the case for anal sex with condoms, where you should avoid any oil-based lubes as they can degrade the latex in condoms.

Positioning yourself

If you’re using fingers, you may find it tricky to get the right position to stimulate yourself well, so try out a few different positions to see what’s most comfortable for you.

  • Sitting on a chair with your bum positioned on the edge to give you easy access.
  • Lying on your side, curled up in a foetal position.
  • Lying on your back, reaching down between your legs with one hand.

If you’re using toys like butt plugs and dildos, you might also like to try squatting or standing (many dildos come equipped with suction cups that you can position on the wall of your shower) or enlist a willing lover to angle the toy for you!

Anal masturbation technique

As with any anal play, you should always begin slowly: one finger or a small toy inserted at first, with lots of lube. Try gently teasing around the edge of the anus first – spreading lube and getting used to the sensation rather than diving straight in.

When you’re inside, if you have a prostate, try pressing or stroking with gentle pressure on the prostate itself: many people find that prostate massage gives them a more intense orgasm. If you’re not sure where the prostate is, try curling a finger inside and exploring around 1-2 inches in – on the front wall of the anus, roughly where you’d expect the g-spot to be in a vagina. In fact, the prostate is sometimes called the ‘p-spot’ so get acquainted with it during your exploration!

If you’re feeling more active, you may prefer anal masturbation with a dildo that’s fixed somewhere – on a flat surface like a wall or table – so you can ‘ride’ it while you wank. Or you may just like to put a toy inside, then sit in a chair or lie down and masturbate as you usually would, enjoying the anal stimulation as a ‘bonus’ alongside your standard wanking technique with hands or sex toys. Which brings us neatly on to…

Anal masturbation and sex toys

Dildos and butt plugs are the sex toys most often recommended for anal masturbation: choose one (or two, or more!) that appeal to you, and prep them with lots of lube. You have a lot of different toys to choose from, but the two most important things to bear in mind are:

Size: pick something that looks like it would be comfortable for you, and err on the small side if this is your first time. You can gradually move up in size if you want to feel more ‘stretched’ or have more pressure on your prostate.

Material: you want a body safe material like silicone, glass or metal, but again if you’re an anal masturbation beginner we’d recommend something softer. Glass and metal can be amazing for anal play, but as they are firm they don’t have the same ‘give’ as soft silicone, so may require a bit of practice before you can insert them.

Don’t forget, too, that if you’re trying out anal play while you masturbate, you can use other sex toys to stimulate the rest of your body at the same time. Combining a motorised butt plug like PleX with flex or dildo with a fantastic penis vibrator like PULSE or JETT means you get intense anal stimulation while also having powerful vibrations running through the shaft of your cock.

And, of course, feel free to share your own techniques in the comments! Seeing as it’s Masturbation Month, what better excuse to spend time getting to know your body even better…
